App: Janggi - Korean Chess
Developer: Quyen Ngo
Janggi (장기), or Korean Chess, is a traditional two-player strategy board game played on a 9×10 point board. It shares ancestry with Chinese Chess (Xiangqi) but has its own distinct rules — no river, a Cannon that needs a screen piece to move at all, and a General and Guard that can move diagonally within the palace.
The App includes three difficulty levels — Beginner, Medium, and Expert — each searching the game tree to a different depth. Beginner occasionally plays a weaker move on purpose so newer players have a fair fight; Expert always plays its strongest move.
Yes. "Play vs Friend" is a local pass-and-play mode on the same device — no account, no internet connection, no second device needed.
This is correct Janggi behaviour, not a bug. The Cannon must jump over exactly one other piece (of either colour, but never another Cannon) to move at all — even to a non-capturing square. In the starting position, a Cannon sometimes has zero legal moves until another piece creates a screen for it.
Janggi allows a player to pass their turn instead of moving, as long as they are not currently in check. This is a normal, legal move in Janggi — not a concession.
These are unlocked with a single one-time purchase ("Pro Unlock", $1.99). It is not a subscription — pay once, keep it forever. If you've already purchased it on this Apple ID, tap "Restore Purchase" in the unlock screen.
Yes. The App makes no network requests at all — every game, including AI opponent moves, runs entirely on your device.
